1099 Tax Calculator

Estimate the total taxes on your 1099 contract income — self-employment tax plus federal income tax.

How to use this calculator

Enter your net self-employment income (1099 profit after business expenses) and your filing status. The calculator stacks the two taxes every contractor owes: the 15.3% self-employment tax and federal income tax at 2025 brackets after the standard deduction. Share a pre-filled link like ?income=80000.

The formula

Self-employment tax = net earnings × 92.35% × 15.3%. Federal income tax = progressive brackets applied to (net earnings − half of SE tax − standard deduction). Your total = both added together. State income tax is not included.

Example: $80,000 as a single filer

SE tax = $73,880 × 15.3% = $11,303.64. Taxable income = $80,000 − $5,651.82 (half SE tax) − $15,000 (standard deduction) = $59,348.18, which produces $7,970.60 of federal income tax. Total estimated 2025 federal tax = $19,274.24, an effective rate of 24.09%.
